YOGA TIPS FOR BETTER PRACTICE

We all love yoga. There’s always something new to discover about the practice or your own body; it’s a process that allows for constant learning, practice and rewards. We asked our yoga friends to share their top tips, advice, or the most valuable lessons they’ve learnt from the practice. Here’s what they said:

CONSISTENCY IS KEY.

This was by far the most popular response. If you want to feel the benefits of yoga and make progress, you’re in it for the long haul. Stay committed to your practice and remind yourself to keep at it - even 5 minutes spent on the mat is better than nothing at all. Consistency will always pay off, so remember that just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, your hand stand won’t appear overnight! It will take consistent effort and hard-work but it will all be worth it in the end.

BE KIND TO YOURSELF.

Both mentally and physically. It's all too easy to become frustrated with your practice, or to berate yourself based on unrealistic expectations you may have had. It’s important to practice self-love with your yoga practice, not only will this make you feel better, but its a much better energy to project out into the world than one of frustration and angst. Being kind to your body means respecting your limits and taking the time to appreciate how far you’ve come. And checking in with your inner dialogue to make sure you’re only encouraging - and not bullying – yourself when you practice. Remember that you are your biggest cheerleader, so show yourself some support and love!

DON'T NEGLECT YOUR SAVASANA!

We know how it is, you’re busy, you have things to do and people to see. But whatever you do, and no matter how “rushed" you are, do not neglect savasana! It is an integral part of your yoga practice. As a general rule, you should stay in savasana for at least 6 minutes, this will give your body – in an anatomically neutral position – enough time to properly cool down and relax. During this time, your body will reset its nervous systems and can process and assimilate the effects of your practice. Savasana is your time for the body and the mind to integrate the effects of your practice; if you skip it you’re only short changing yourself.

KEEP BREATHING!

Allow your breathe to guide for your practice. Anytime you feel self-judgement creeping in, or you start to struggle in a posture: Just. Breathe. In and out through the nose, and allow any tension or negativity to float away. Your breathe is your most powerful tool - use it.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE JOURNEY.

Practice with awareness and a sense of in wardness. Don’t get fixated on a certain posture, or feel afraid to challenge yourself with a new sequence, posture, or yoga class. The only way we master new poses is by pushing through the fear and trying something new. Your yoga journey might not be linear but it’s important to keep observing yourself and most importantly enjoy the ride. The benefits of yoga are endless, so be patient, have fun, and never give up on your practice.
